CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The York College golf squad competed at the 46th Annual Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Golf Championship at Camp Lejeune, NC over the weekend. The tournament featured 32 teams broken into two separate tournaments.
The Spartans finished eighth of 13 teams at the Paradise Scarlet Bracket. The Green and White shot a three-day total of 909. York had a great Friday at the scarlet course with a team score of 290. York fell back to the pack with a 315 on the gold course on Saturday. The Green and White completed the tournament with a 304 on the scarlet course on Sunday.
Conference foe Marymount won the scarlet bracket with a score of 891. Kenyon finished second at 899 and Surry followed at 903. Johnston placed fourth at 904 while Lynchburg rounded out the top five at 907.
Sophomore Tyler Newton led the Spartans as he won the Scarlet Bracket individual championship. Newton shot a three-day total of 214, a total of two-under-par. He won the bracket by two shots to win his first individual championship. Newton got off to a scorching start as he fired a three-under-par 67 on the scarlet course on Friday. He followed that with a four-over-par 76 at the gold course. Newton finished the tournament with a one-over-par 71 at the scarlet course on Sunday.
Junior Michael Fedak was York's next finisher as he placed 34th with a total score of 234. Fedak shot 82 on Friday, 76 on Saturday and finished up with a 76 on Sunday. Fedak finished four strokes back of a top 25 finish.
Freshman Zach Billings placed in a tie for 42nd as he shot 237. Billings shot a four-over-par 74 on Friday. He followed that with an 82 on Saturday and an 81 on Sunday. He was just two strokes back of a top 35 finish.
Freshman Morgan Uhlick was York's fourth tournament finisher as he was also tied for 42nd with a 237. Uhlick carded a 75 on Friday. Struggled with an 86 on Saturday but got back on track with a 76 on Sunday.
Senior Alex Colton rounded out the Spartan tournament participants as he shot a total score of 243. Colton shot a four-over-par 74 on Friday. He then shot 81 on Saturday and concluded the tournament with an 88 on Sunday. Colton finished tied for 54th in the 70 player field.
The Spartans return to action on April 10 when they head to the Glen Heath Shipbuilders Memorial Tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia. The two-day tournament will be York's final tune up before the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference championships that will be held April 14-16.
