#16 St. Mary's Pulls Away from York Late to Notch CAC Win

YORK, PA –The York College men's basketball team hung tough against #16 St. Mary's College before falling to the Seahawks 69-51 in Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night in York.

The Seahawks improve to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the CAC while the Spartans fall to 2-12 overall and 1-5 in the league.

The Seahawks got off to a quick start in the low-scoring first half as they led 8-3 early. The Spartans cut the lead to one twice before the Seahawks answered with an 8-0 run to push the lead to nine. York kept fighting as they put together a 7-2 run, trimming their deficit to four at the 7:08 mark of the first half.

The St. Mary's lead would fluctuate between four and eight points over the final six minutes of the half before the Seahawks took a 31-23 lead to the break.

The Seahawks opened the second half with a Nick LaGuerre three point play to push the lead to 11 but the Spartans answered with five straight points, cutting the SMC lead to six. The pattern of York getting close only to have St. Mary's answer the run continued through the early stages of the second half. York's final gasp came when Ryan Beaver (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) drilled a triple at the 9:20 mark, pulling York to within five at 49-44. The Seahawks went on a 13-3 run to seal the win as they pushed their advantage to 15 with 4:54 left in the game. St. Mary's pushed their final lead to 18, a deceptive number which didn't indicate how well the Spartans played against the highly regarded and nationally ranked Seahawks.

Troy Spurrier led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, as he was 8-for-11 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Donn Hill added 15 points and seven rebounds while LaGuerre added 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and five steals in his 34 minutes of play. Brendan McFall was the fourth Seahawk in double figures with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four blocked shots.

Senior Mike Mathews (Newark, Del./Salesianum) led York with 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots. Senior Matt McNeely (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) added nine points, seven boards and two steals.

After shooting 41.4% from the floor in the first half, the Seahawks dialed up a 60.9% shooting percentage in the second 20 minutes of action. St. Mary's finished the game at an even 50% from the floor including 5-for-15 (33.3%) from three. St. Mary's was a perfect 12-for-12 from free throw line in the win.

York converted 37% from the floor while they made 4-of-16 (25%) from three. The Spartans went 7-for-11 from the free throw stripe.

St. Mary's outrebounded York 36-26 in the game.
