Kouvaris Heading to Salem; Spartan Senior Picked for DIII All-Star Game
YORK, PA – York College senior men's basketball player Paul Kouvaris (Baltimore, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) has been selected to play in the 2012 Reese's Division III College All-Star Game on Saturday, March 17 at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA. The game will be played as part of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship weekend.
Kouvaris will play on the West team coached by former Ohio Northern University coach Gale Daugherty. Kouvaris is one of three Middle-Atlantic representatives, joining Franklin & Marshall's Georgio Milligan and Misericordia's Ethan Eichhorst on the West squad.
The teams are composed of two senior players from each of the eight regions in Division III and two seniors have been selected by online voting on D3hoops.com.
The game will feature a pair of outstanding former coaches who have both been recipients of the NABC Division III Distinguished Service Award. Former Ohio Wesleyan College coach Gene Mehaffey will lead the East team, while Daugherty was selected to coach the West team.
The senior All-Star players were nominated by coaches and selected by a panel of coaches representing each region in Division III.
Division III is the largest membership division in the NCAA, with approximately 450 member schools, 43 voting conferences and over 170,000 student-athletes.
Spartan head coach Jeff Gamber believes Kouvaris was worthy of the honor.
"Paul has worked hard to make himself into a great player," says Gamber. "After the year he had, I am glad the coaches picked him to represent the best of Division III Basketball."
Kouvaris was humbled by the selection.
"I didn't think I would ever get such a great opportunity," states Kouvaris. "I have to thank Coach Gamber, Coach Dean and all my teammates for helping me reach this game. I am extremely honored to get the chance to represent York College and the Spartan men's basketball program at the Reese's All-Star game. I am very excited to get to play one more game for my college career. I am going to go down to Salem and enjoy every minute of it."
Kouvaris was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year and was named first-team All-Middle Atlantic Region by both the NABC and d3hoops.com. He led the CAC in scoring and finished his Spartan career 11th on York's all-time scoring list.
The All-Star game tips at 4:30 pm on Saturday and precedes the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship game which will tip at 7:00 pm.
