Kouvaris Continues to Collect Post-Season Awards

YORK, PA – York College senior forward Paul Kouvaris (Baltimore, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) picked up a pair of post-season accolades as announced Monday. Kouvaris earned NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) first-team All-Middle Atlantic honors as voted on by the association. He also earned d3hoops.com first-team All-Middle Atlantic accolades as designated by the leading website dedicated to coverage of Division III basketball. The awards continue to pour in for Kouvaris who was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year two weeks ago.

Kouvaris led the Spartans to the Capital Athletic Conference championship in late February as the Spartans entered the tournament as the fourth seed. York downed Frostburg State at home before going on the road and defeating top seeded St. Mary's in the semifinals and second-seeded Mary Washington in the championship game.

Kouvaris finished the season averaging 16.9 points per game and 6.6 boards per contest. He shot 55.2% from the field and 74.3% from the charity stripe. He had 43 assists, 21 blocked shots and 27 steals in his 29 games played.

Kouvaris finished first in the CAC in scoring, sixth in field goal percentage, eight in rebounding, first in free throws made, first in free throw attempts and tenth in free throw percentage. He reached double figures in 26 of his 29 games including 10 20-plus point efforts. He recorded a season-high 24 points in the December 13 win over LaRoche. He reached double figures in rebounding twice during the year as he notched double-doubles in the November 30 win at Wesley and the February 21 CAC Tournament win over Frostburg State.

Earlier in the season, Kouvaris became the 20th member of the York College 1,000 career point club. He concluded his career with 1,321 career points, good for 11th on the all-time scoring list. He also is a career 54.3% shooter from the floor while he converted 70.6% from the free throw line. Kouvaris collected 653 career rebounds (6.2 rpg) while he also had 164 assists, 58 blocked shots and 104 steals in his 105 career contests.

Spartan head coach Jeff Gamber was pleased to see Kouvaris honored.

"Paul had a great year and led us to a conference championship," said Gamber. "He has been a good player for us for four years and he was fantastic this year. I am happy to see him earn these all-region honors."

Kouvaris joins a small group of Spartans that have earned the CAC Player-of-the-Year, a berth on the NABC all-region team and also on the d3hoops.com all-region squad. Kouvaris joins former Spartan greats Chad McGowan and Nick Brady in that exclusive Spartan club.

Kouvaris is now eligible to make one or both All-American squads. The All-American teams are slated to be released on Friday during the Division III Final Four in Salem, VA.
