ABBOTTSTOWN, PA – The York College golf squad finished ninth of 15 teams at the highly competitive Mason-Dixon Collegiate Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the Bridges Golf Club in Abbottstown.
The Spartans finished with a two-day total of 616 as they fired a 311 on a brutal Saturday followed by a solid 305 on a much better weather day on Sunday. The Spartans finished one stroke out of a tie for seventh and 11 strokes out of a top five finish in the event.
Allegheny won the tournament with a score of 591 as the Gators blistered the Bridges course with a 296 on Saturday and a 295 on Sunday. Allegheny set a new tournament scoring record as they are the first squad to shoot under 600 as a team in the tournament.
The host McDaniel Green Terror finished second, nine strokes back at 600 after shooting 302 on Saturday and 298 on Sunday. Kenyon was third at 603 while Franklin & Marshall was fourth at 604. Stevens rounded out the top five with a score of 605.
The Spartans were paced by senior Ryan Wolbach (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) as he shot 148 with matching 74's each day. During Saturday's round, Wolbach opened his round with three front side bogeys to shoot 39 on the opening nine. He bounced back with eight straight pars on the back nine followed by a birdie on 18 to finish with a back side 35 for the two-over-par 74 total.
On Sunday, Wolbach had two bogies over the first five holes but notched a birdie on the par five eighth hole to card a one-over-par 37. He birdied ten but bogeyed back-to-back holes on 14 and 15 to rise to two over for the round. Wolbach parred the final three holes to finish at 74. He finished tied for seventh in the 77-player field.
Sophomore Brandon Hur (Monroe Tonwnship, N.J./Monroe Township) was the next Spartan finisher as he shot 153 for the weekend. Hur opened his tournament with a 78 on Saturday. He shot 39 on the opening nine of the tournament. Hur then shot 39 on the back nine to finish six over par for the round. On Sunday, Hur again shot 39 on the front nine Sunday as he had a trio of bogeys in the first four holes. Another bogey on eight was erased by a birdie three on the par four ninth hole. Hur was very good on the back nine as he fired an even par 36 including a trio of birdies. His 75 allowed him to finish tied for 25th as he made a three-stroke improvement over Saturday's score.
Freshman Tyler Newton (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) finished two strokes behind Hur as he shot a two-day total of 155. Newton carded an eight over par 80 on Saturday. It was the first time in his collegiate career that he did not shoot in the 70's. Newton shot 39 on the opening nine on Saturday and followed that with a 41 on the inward nine. On Sunday, the freshman standout rebounded to shoot 75. Newton shot 39 on the front as he had four bogeys, one birdie and four pars. He then played well on the back with an even par 36 with three birdies, three bogeys and three pars. Newton finished tied for 37th in the tournament.
Junior Alex Colton (Bangor, Pa./Bangor) was York's fourth scorer as he shot a two-day total of 161. Colton shot 79 on Saturday with a 39 on the front and a 40 on the back. On Sunday, Colton shot matching 41's for his 82. He finished tied for 62nd for the tournament.
Senior Tyler Keim (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) was the final Spartan to participate in the tournament as he shot 167 for the event. Keim shot 86 on Saturday and bounced back with an 81 on Sunday.
The Spartans close out their 2015 fall campaign on Tuesday, October 13 when they travel to the Alvernia Fall Invitational at Ledge Rock Country Club in Mohnton, Pa.
