LANCASTER, PA – The York College golf squad captured the team championship at the prestigious 19-team Bent Creek Invitational on Monday at Bent Creek Country Club in Lancaster, PA.
In addition to the team championship, senior Kevin Long (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) earned the individual medalist honors. Long tied with teammate David Boslough (Dalton, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and Jared Brown from Franklin & Marshall for first and earned the title on match of cards. The trio each shot a one-under-par 70. The individual championship for Long is his second of this season and the sixth of his career.
The Spartan shot a team total of 302, winning the tournament by four strokes over Messiah. Franklin & Marshall finished at 307 while Rutgers-Camden (309) and Stevenson (310) rounded out the top five.
Long started on hole #11 and quickly got on a roll with a birdie on the par five 12th. After a pair of pars and a bogey brought him back to level par, Long birdied 17 to crawl back under par after eight holes. Long went two over in the next five holes as he was one over after 14 holes. Long then birdied the par four seventh hole but then bogeyed the eighth hole to give the stroke back. He rebounded to birdie nine before closing out his round with a par on the tenth hole. Long was consistent as he shot an even par 35 on the front and a one-under-par 35 on the back.
Boslough started on number 12 and got off to a quick start with a birdie. He would then birdie 14 to stand two under through three holes of play. He bogeyed the par three 15th but quickly got that stroke back with a birdie on the par four 17th. Boslough got it to three under par with a birdie on the fifth hole but bogeyed the par three sixth hole and the par four eighth hole before finishing with three straight pars for his best collegiate round. Boslough shot a one-over-par 36 on the front and a two-under-par 34 on the back.
Freshman Anthony Wagner (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) was the third Spartan in the 70's as he carded a 79. Wagner shot 40 on the front and 39 on the back as he tied for 22nd in the 97-player field. Josh Strausbaugh (Orlando, Fla./Lake Howell) was the fourth Spartan scorer as he shot an 83 to finish tied for 47th.
Sophomore Ryan Wolbach (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had the shot of the day as he eagled the par four 14th as he holed his second shot from 165 yards out.
The Spartans' team score of 302 was their best score of the year, besting the 303 they shot at the season-opening PSU Harrisburg Invitational at Dauphin Highlands. Three of York's rounds this fall have been under 310.
The Spartans are right back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to the Ursinus Invitational at Raven's Claw Country Club. The action starts at 1:00 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
