York College Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation, Paul Saikia, announced today, the formation of the Spartans’ first official booster club, The Spartan Advance.
The concept has been in the works for over two years. Saikia commented, “We actually began this initiative some time ago. What started as a simple idea, grew into something much larger. Fortunately, our Development Office has been very involved and supportive. Together, we’ve been committed to doing this the right way--it’s critical, because as we move forward, our dependence on the funds we generate will grow.”
The Spartan Advance is composed of three prongs, individual club memberships, corporate sponsorship, and fundraising events. Club memberships are now available, with the corporate options coming later in the fall. The first fundraising event, planned as an annual golf outing, has been scheduled for October, 2014.
When asked “Why now?”, Saikia remarked, “Like many, many collegiate athletic programs, we’ve grown beyond our budget. Frankly, the bar has risen and we are acknowledging that higher expectations require resources to match. We are working toward a goal of making provisions for all of our teams to compete at a championship level.”
The Spartan Advance has enlisted the leadership of head volleyball coach, Sue DuMars, in a secondary role as Coordinator of Departmental Fundraising. In addition, three former Spartan athletes, who are now prominent in the local business community, have volunteered to serve as the club’s Advisory Council. Jim May (’72), George Shorb (’72), and Patti Stirk (’87) have been integral in the planning process and share the honor of being the first three members of The Spartan Advance. All have been very active in supporting the College on multiple levels. Shorb currently sits on the Board of Trustees.
“We are relying on the tradition of our programs as a catalyst. Ultimately, people will make this a success, and over the years we’ve been fortunate to have many incredible individuals involved in York College Athletics. Patti, Jim, and George are great ambassadors of YCP and represent the very best of who we are.”, said Saikia.
The Spartan Advance is celebrating its kickoff with a tailgate party on October 5 (Fall Fest). Supporters are encouraged to join the fun while Field Hockey, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, and Volleyball are at home, in action. Membership registration will be available on site...or join now by clicking the Spartan Advance link on the Spartan website (www.ycpspartans.com).
