York, PA – York College head field hockey coach Katie Fost has announced the additions of Alexa Taylor and April Bastress on the field hockey staff as the Spartans prepare for the 2018 season. Taylor and Bastress join Fost and long-time assistant Shelly (Lobach) Cree on the coaching staff for the upcoming campaign.

Fost welcomes back both Taylor and Bastress to their alma mater and is excited to share the sideline with such talented and proud alumnae.

"I could not be more thrilled to have Alexa and April coming back to York and sharing their passion for our sport, and pride of York with our current and future student-athletes," says Fost.

Taylor volunteered with the team this past fall and is transitioning to sharing more responsibilities on and off the field with Coach Fost. Taylor has started learning the ropes in the office and will become a more active part of the student-athlete experience at York, as well as, continuing to be an essential part of the recruiting process.

"Alexa did a phenomenal job for us this past fall, and I'm excited to help mentor and encourage her passion for coaching. It's great to get her involved in all aspects of the program and pass along opportunities that I was presented when I was in her shoes."

Taylor played for the Green and White from 2013-2016 starting and playing in every game. Taylor was a junior and senior captain, and is currently tied for second when it comes to individual single game assists, having assisted three goals against Frostburg State in her senior year. Along with success out on the field she was named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for three consecutive years.  She majored in psychology with a minor in applied youth development.

Fost also welcomes April (McFarland) Bastress back to York. Bastress had a standout career as a Spartan athlete etching her name into many career records that still stand today.

"April had a phenomenal career her at York and I'm looking forward to getting her involved with the program and sharing her goal scoring secrets with our student-athletes," says Fost.

Bastress is currently the leading goal scorer in program history (53), third in points (115) and game winners (13), along with being sixth all-time in shots (239). Along with her career highlights, Bastress was an all-region honoree in 2008, CAC all-conference team selection in 2007 and 2008, and Rookie of the Year in 2005. Along with success out on the field, Bastress was also a multiple time NFHCA National Academic Squad honoree. She majored in elementary education and special education, and is putting her degree to use as a first grade teacher. Bastress is married to York College head wrestling coach Duane Bastress and they have a daughter, Cora.

"I could not be more excited for the addition of both Alexa and April to our staff. We are building a proud culture of where our program has been, and where we are heading. I am very fortunate that I can have two former standout Spartans join our staff, who can continue to help me instill the drive and work that it takes to get to where we want to be in the near future. It's going to be an exciting spring!"

Cree comes back to the Spartan staff for her fifth year with the program. Her tenure has spanned three head coaches as she has been a constant for the program during the times of transition.

Fost and her staff officially open the non-traditional segment of their season on Tuesday, April 3.
