NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College field hockey team dropped a 7-2 decision to #5 Christopher Newport in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, VA.
The Captains remain perfect on the season with a mark of 17-0 overall and a 5-0 in the conference. The Spartans fall to 4-11 overall and 1-4 in the CAC.
The Captains controlled the play from the start. CNU's Belle Tunstall opened the scoring with an unassisted tally just 3:41 into the game. The Spartans battled back to tie the game at one when Kailey Brewer (Hartley, Del./Smyrna) scored off a Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) penalty corner 6:24 into the game.
The game remained tied until the 18:45 mark when Newport's Marlene Lichty found the back of the cage, giving the hosts the 2-1 lead. The Captains added a third goal just 30 seconds later as Tunstall notched her second goal of the game off a pass from Sarah Smith.
Spartan goalie Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) would keep the Captains off the board the remainder of the half despite being under constant bombardment from the CNU offense.
The Captains built on the lead seven minutes into the second half as Tunstall completed the hat trick with her third goal of the game off an Allie Hackbarth helper. CNU added another goal at the 48 minute mark when Meghan Sullivan scored off an Alexa Hendrickson assist, pushing the hosts' advantage to 5-1.
CNU tallied another goal in the 52nd minute as Shelby Judkins scored. The Spartans cut the deficit to 6-2 when Brewer and Saylor hooked up a second time in the 60th minute. CNU's Taylor Williams closed out the scoring with the Captains' seventh goal at the 63:23 mark of the game.
Baker stood tall all day long for the Spartans as she went the distance in goal, registering a career-high 25 saves in her 70 minutes in cage. The 25 saves ranks second all time behind Megan Eckenrode's 30 stops in a September 2004 game at Salisbury. Junior Alyssa Martin (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded a career-high three defensive saves in the game.
Brewer's two tallies raises her team-leading total to ten as she now has 23 points for York. Saylor's two assists give her four for the year, which ties her for the team lead. Tunstall finished with three goals on the game as five different Captains scored goals in the game.
The Captains finished the game with a 51-5 margin in totals shots and a 37-4 margin in shots on goal. CNU registered a 13-5 edge in penalty corners.
The Spartans conclude their 2013 regular season on Tuesday afternoon when they host St. Mary's in a Capital Athletic Conference match. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
