Spartans Sting Hornets for Come-from-Behind Victory
Shots (on goal)
YORK, PA - The York College women's field hockey squad had an explosive second half in their 4-3 come from behind win over Shenandoah in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon in York. The victory is the second straight for the Spartans as they now stand at 2-3. Shenandoah falls to 3-4 on the season.
Shenandoah got off to a quick start as Ashley Cross tipped one in off of Alexa Lapp's assist to give the Hornets an early 1-0 lead. The goal came just 8:20 into the game. The Spartans put a lot of offensive pressure on Shenandoah's goalie, Sarah Clare, in the first half with 11 shots, but none of those shots found the back of the box. The Hornets had some trouble getting shots off as they only recorded three shots in the first half.
Ashley Cross opened up the second half for the Hornets with a quick goal as she ripped one from the right wing past Spartan goalie Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) for the 2-0 lead. Cross's second goal of the game came just 2:24 into the half and was her seventh of the year. York was quick to answer back as sophomore Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) cleaned up a loose ball in front of the net for her first goal of the season, drawing York to within one goal.
The ball was batted back and forth between teams when it landed in front of Spartan senior Jillian Brezgel (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) as she fired one from the top of the circle to tie things up at 2-2 in the action-packed second half. Brezgel's goal came with 28:34 remaining in regulation.
Shenandoah had the answer just a minute 38 later as Kelani Bailey blew past the defense and was tripped up by Baker in front of York's goal. She was awarded with a stroke and would take full advantage of it as she ripped one past the Baker for the 3-2 lead.
Senior Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna) waited for her opportunity to make a big play as Brezgel was driving the ball up the field. Brezgel entered the ball into the circle and dumped it off to Brewer who was able to record her sixth goal of the season, tying the match at three with 17:13 left in regulation. Less than four minutes later, the Spartans were rewarded with a penalty corner. Junior Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) entered the ball for the green and white to senior Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) who ripped one past Clare for the game-winning goal.
For the game, York held all of the statistical advantages with a 24-6 edge in total shots and an impressive 9-2 margin in penalty corners.
Baker records the win for her Spartan squad with two saves on five shots on goal. Clare takes the loss having six saves on the 10 Spartan shots on goal.
The Green and White return to action on Thursday, September 19, against Eastern Mennonite. The game is set to start at 4:30 at Kinsley Field.
