YORK, PA – The York College field hockey program had 12 players honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as they were named members of the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad as announced on Tuesday.
The Spartan list was headlined by four-time honoree Danielle Gaitings (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) as the senior captain boasts an overall GPA of 3.92 in Elementary and Special Education. The academic award caps a year in which she was also honored as a first-team All-Capital Athletic Conference selection at defender.
Joining Gaitings on the academic squad were fellow All-CAC honorees Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) and Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna). Burk is a senior midfielder and Brewer a junior forward.
The remaining members of the Spartans who earned the academic accolades include sophomore Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield), senior Jessica Esteves (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville), sophomore Leah Hunsinger (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard), freshman Julia King (Northampton, Pa./Northampton), sophomore captain Alyssa Martin (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), freshman Holly Martin (Hanover, Pa./South Western), sophomore Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township), sophomore Nancy Saylor (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), and junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island).
The individual award recognizes field hockey playing student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the fall semester of the 2012-13 academic year.
The Spartans also earned a spot on the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award. The National Academic Team Award recognizes those institutions that achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. The Spartan squad accumulated an impressive 3.22 GPA in the first semester of the year.
