YORK, Pa. – The York College women's field hockey team lost 5-2 to Rhodes College in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon. The Lynx were able to come back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to capture the victory.
With the loss the Spartans fall to 7-7 overall and the Lynx are now 9-4.
Less than five minutes later the Spartans made the game 2-0 off a goal from Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island). Wilt got her own rebound and flicked in a shot around the Rhodes goalkeeper at 8:29.
Despite more scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the half the Green and White could not seem to finish. Excellent defense and goalkeeping helped the Spartans to keep the Lynx scoreless in the first 35 minutes of play. Danielle Gaitings (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) came up with two big defensive saves and Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./ Freehold Township) recorded one as well.
The Lynx entered the second half on fire. A little over three minutes into the half Katie Faucher scored for Rhodes to make the score 2-1. Faucher would score again less than three minutes to tie up the game.
Rhodes took the lead off a goal from Mackenzie Holland at 59:35 and never looked back. Julie Hertzman scored at 62:24 off a pass from Kat Simpson make it 4-2. With under three minutes left to play Katie Faucher scored the final goal of the game. The last goal also helped Faucher earn a hat trick.
The shot total for the first half was pretty equal for both teams but Rhodes strong second half gave them a 29-17 advantage overall as well as a 23-8 advantage in shots on goal. Penalty corners were very close with Rhodes recording a slim 7-6 advantage.
Starting goalkeeper Baker played 57:31 and recorded 12 total saves for the Spartans. Alvarado played 12:29 and finished the game with three saves. Rhodes goalkeeper Jordan Robinson made six saves throughout the game.
York returns to action on Thursday at 4:30 for an important CAC matchup against Frostburg St. University. The game will be at Kinsley Field and is designated as the Spartans PINK game in honor of breast cancer awareness month.
