DOVER, DEL – The York College field hockey squad dropped a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Friday night in Dover, Delaware.
The Spartans fall to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in the CAC. The Wolverines remain perfect in the league at 3-0 while they are 8-5 overall.
The Wolverines had a number of first half opportunities as they outshot the Spartans 16-6. Fortunately for York, the Green and White only trailed 1-0 after Madison Leone tallied a goal off a Devin Price assist 24:40 into the game. Spartan goalie Abby Baker (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) continues to play well since being inserted into the starting lineup as she had five first half saves.
The Spartan offense turned the tables on the Wolverines in the second half as they went on the offensive, firing off 15 shots to just one for the hosts. Junior Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) tied the game just over 10 minutes into the second half as she put home a rebound off a Katie Petrillo (Howell, N.J./Freehold Township) shot for the goal. The goal was Wilt's team-leading seventh of the year.
The Spartans had number of other opportunities including a defensive save on a Wilt shot with 55 seconds left in regulation.
The Green and White got the first shot of overtime but the Wolverines seized the momentum and applied heavy pressure to the Spartan net. Baker twice turned away Leone before the junior put home the game-winner on a corner off a pass from Danielle Tearl.
The two-goal night raised Leone's season total to 11 while the game-winner was her fifth of the year.
Baker played well despite the loss as the freshman recorded seven saves in her 76:22 of work in the cage. Elizabeth Groom recorded eight saves in her winning effort. Brooke Gannon made three defensive saves for the Wolverines.
Both teams attempted 22 total shots while the Spartans held a slight 12-10 edge in shots on goal. York also had a 12-7 margin in penalty corners in the game.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Rhodes College in a non-conference contest at 12:00 pm.
