Late Goal Lifts Spartans To A Win Over Shenandoah
WINCHESTER, Va. – The York College women's field hockey team scored the game-winning goal with no time left on the clock to claim a 3-2 non-conference matchup victory at Shenandoah Tuesday night.
The win improves the Spartans overall record to 4-2 while Shenandoah now stands at 5-3 overall.
The Green and White had some opportunities to score in the opening minutes of the game but could not seem to find the back of the cage. The Hornets would strike first with a goal from Hannah Johnson at 13:45. The Spartans wasted little time getting on the board themselves as Madi Wilt (Harwood, Md./Kent Island) scored her third goal in two games off a pass from Ashton Burk (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) at 19:06. York would not allow the Hornets another shot in the first half and despite having more scoring chances would enter halftime tied 1-1.
Starting the second half the Spartans came out on fire. Kailey Brewer (Hartly, Del./Smyrna) scored only 42 seconds in off a pass from Wilt. The Green and White would continue to outshoot Shenandoah but the Hornets did not give up. Tori Finney tied the game 2-2 with less than six minutes left in regulation. The Spartans did not back down and fought to get a penalty corner as time ran out on the clock. York would get three penalty corners and with time expired Brewer would score her second goal of the game to capture the win for the Spartans.
York finished the game with a huge 18-3 advantage in shots and registered 10 of the 11 total penalty corners. Spartan Brittany Alvarado (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) recorded one save in 21:33 while Alanna Curtis (Eastampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) played the remaining 48:27 in goal. The Hornets goalkeeper Sarah Clare made five total saves.
The Spartans return to action Saturday at 1:00 pm as they travel to take on Mary Washington in their first CAC matchup of the season.
