Reich’s Hat Trick Fuels Spartan Victory
Shots (on goal)
YORK, Pa. – After an offensive explosion Saturday afternoon the York College field hockey team defeated Roanoke College 8-0 under sunny skies at Kinsley Field. With the win the Spartans tally their first win of the 2011 campaign and improve to 1-1 while the visiting Maroons fall to 0-2 with the loss.
The highlight of today's contest was the three-goal performance by junior forward Sandee Reich. Each of Reich's three goals came in the first half and were each the first three goals of the contest. Assisting on the goals were sophomore forward Madi Wilt, senior captain Colleen O'Rourke, and sophomore forward Kailey Brewer.
Brewer also got in on the scoring action with goals of her own. The sophomore forward knocked in a pair of loose balls to capture her first two goals of the season.
The scoring did not stop there. The Spartans went on to score three more times and stretch the lead to eight.
Freshmen Leah Hunsinger and Liz Maue, along with sophomore Madi Wilt each picked up their first career goals for the Green and White. Hunsinger claimed her first career goal after being assisted by a crisp cross-circle pass from her teammate Reich. Persistence paid off for both Maue and Wilt as they picked up unassisted goals from deflections and redirects off the goalie's pads.
Claiming her first career shutout for the Spartans, goalkeeper Lydia Pirie tallied up two saves while facing seven Roanoke shots in 60 minutes of play. With the victory Pirie improves to 1-1 on the season while Maroon goalkeeper Cristina Scichilone picks up the loss despite posting five saves in the contest.
The Green and White dominated both the shot and penalty corner margins in today's one-sided affair. The figures amounted to 20-6 in the shots column and 18-3 for the penalty corners.
The Spartans return to action Wednesday, September, 7 as they travel to nearby Gettysburg for a non-conference tilt. Game time is slated for 4:30 pm.
