FROSTBURG, Md. – Notching their second come-from-behind
victory in as many games, the York College field hockey squad
posted a 3-1 Capital Athletic Conference triumph over Frostburg
State Saturday afternoon in Frostburg. The victory pushes the
Spartans' 2010 mark to 8-5, including a 3-3 record in the CAC,
while the Bobcats fall to 3-12 and 1-3 in league play.
Falling behind early in the contest, just as York had done last Thursday against Wilson, the Green and White dug an initial hole as Frostburg struck first just 9:19 into the game. Chelsea Smith rapped home her third tally of the year, an unassisted score, to put the home Bobcats up 1-0.
York bounced back ten minutes later however, as they drew level courtesy of senior Casey Lawrence. The veteran midfielder inserted a penalty corner at the 19:35 mark and just 19 seconds later she would tally the game-tying score. Lawrence finished off an assist from fellow senior Kelly Kreamer to record her sixth goal of the year.
Over the next 13:34, the match proved a back-and-forth event as both squads had chances to score. The Spartans recorded four penalty corners and four shots, including three requiring saves from Bobcat goalkeeper Maggie Edwards. On the other end, the Bobcats notched three penalty corners and one shot, an attempt that was saved by Spartan netminder Lydia Pirie.
It would prove to be the Green and White however, that next found paydirt to obtain the 2-1 advantage. Senior all-conference forward Katie Dawkins recorded what eventually became the game-winning score as she finished off a Sandee Reich assist with only 1:21 remaining on the first half clock.
Following halftime, and just as they had on Thursday, the Spartans firmly put down the defensive clamps. Over the final 35 minutes, the Green and White only allowed a single Frostburg shot and just two penalty corners.
On the offensive end, freshman forward Kailey Brewer provided a late insurance score for the Spartans. As the game had just edged into the 65th minute of play, the talented rookie registered her fifth goal of the 2010 campaign. Just a mere 12 seconds after a Spartan timeout, Brewer knocked home finishing off a Colleen O'Rourke helper to give the visitors a 3-1 advantage.
For the contest, the York squad held a huge 24-5 lead in shots and an 18-8 bulge in penalty corners.
Pirie secures her third victory in as many starts in the Spartan cage as she made two saves for the Green and White. Edwards suffers the loss in the Bobcat goal despite making 13 stops. Additionally, Erin Johns and Sarah Ziff each recorded a defensive save for Frostburg.
Looking to push their current three-game winning streak to four straight, the Spartans travel to nearby Elizabethtown on Wednesday, October 13. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 4:30 pm start.
