Alvernia Downs Spartan Field Hockey in 2010 Opener
READING, PA – The York College field hockey squad dropped their 2010 opener at Alvernia University, falling to the Crusaders 3-1 on Wednesday evening. Alvernia now stands at 1-0 while the Spartans are 0-1. The Spartans opened their 2009 season with a loss to the Crusaders.
The two teams were knotted at the half despite Alvernia holding a significant 10-4 edge in first half shots. Spartan goalie Maggie Schlauch was solid in the first half with six saves.
The Crusaders struck first just 4:15 into the second half as Katy Eby found the back of the cage off a feed from Kyle Dillman. Alvernia pushed it to 2-0 and Dillman was the middle of it again, earning another assist, this one on a pass to Samantha Landis who sent the ball through Schlauch for the score with 11:26 remaining in regulation.
The Spartans wasted little time in responding as Sandee Reich found Allison Roush for York's first goal of the season. The goal came a mere 12 seconds after Landis' goal gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately for York, they could not draw any closer as Alvernia got a big insurance goal from Eby off a pass from Landis with 7:44 remaining in the game.
Abby Eby earned the win in goal for Alvernia. She registered five stops in the win. Schlauch had seven saves as she was tagged with the loss.
Alvernia finished the game with a 20-9 edge in shots and a 12-8 margin in penalty corners.
The Spartans make their 2010 home debut when they host Albright on Saturday, September 4, in a 1:00 pm non-conference contest at Kinsley Field.
