Jonathan Grosse begins his second season on Mike Scappa’s coaching staff after a successful collegiate career at Kutztown University.
Grosse is charged with coaching the Spartans’ young pitching staff in 2012. He is also responsible for working with all the baseball players in the weight room as he brings a strong knowledge of baseball conditioning. Grosse also assists Scappa in all aspects of the program including recruiting, budgeting, game day duties and the coordination of practice.
Grosse started his collegiate career at Suffolk County Community College where he pitched. He then moved on to Kutztown University where he led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Division II World Series in 2010. He posted a mark of 7-1 in 61.1 innings of work with a 4.23 ERA. He struck out 43 and held opponents to a .265 batting average. He drew the game-one start in the World Series in Cary, NC and he was outstanding. Grosse threw eight innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks as he earned the no-decision in the Golden Bears’ 2-1 12-inning win.
In 2011, Grosse went 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA in a team-high 49.1 innings of work. He made a team-high nine starts with one complete game. He struck out 36 as opponents hit .269 against him.
Grosse has also competed at a high level during the summer as he played in the prestigious Mississippi River Valley League in 2010.
Grosse has a great working knowledge of the game. He was the head coach for the Bayport-Blue Point Varsity baseball summer team in 2011 while he has also instructed younger players in the finer points of pitching.
