YORK, Pa. – The No. 28 York College baseball team completed a sweep of Southern Virginia with scores of 10-4 and 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at Jaquet Field.
The Spartans (25-8) took control of game one with a five-run fourth inning, which featured runs by seniors Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western), Chris Turrisi (Washington Township, N.J./St. Joseph's) and Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), in addition to a big two-RBI single by senior Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
After taking the lead in the fourth, York continued to add to its lead over the Knights (5-26) by scoring one run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Senior Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) contributed to the scoring in the fifth with an RBI-triple, his first triple of the season, which drove in junior J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley).
Seniors Herr and Turrisi both finished game one with a pair of RBI, while senior center fielder Hershey finished the game with a pair of runs scored.
Senior left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) received the start on the mound for game one and put his team in position to win as surrendered just three runs on six hits as he tossed five innings and matched a career-high with five strikeouts. With the win, alexander improves to 2-1.
In game two, the Green and White received another fine pitching performance from another senior lefty hurler, Dan McNamara (Southampton, N.J./Seneca). Making his first career start, McNamara pitched the complete seven-inning game, surrendering just one run on four hits with a career-high five strikeouts and just one walk. With the win McNamara improves to 2-0 on the season.
York jumped on top early in game two, posting two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Porter drove in both runs in the first with a single to right center that drove in Herr and Hershey. Freshman Dan Hare (Felton, Pa./Kennard-Dale) scored in the second inning after Hershey reached on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Russ Patti (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) also crossed the plate following a double down the right field line by Herr.
The Spartans will return to action on Sunday as they face No. 25 Ithaca College in a non-conference doubleheader 1:00 p.m. at Jaquet Field.
