Spartan Offense Too Much to Handle as York Takes Two From Wesley
YORK, Pa. – The York College baseball team got back to its winning ways with a sweep of Wesley College in a pair of Capital Athletic Conference contests by scores of 21-8 and 12-4 on Saturday afternoon at Jaquet Field.
The Spartans (17-3, 12-1 CAC) were hitting on all cylinders in both contests, scoring in 13 of the 16 innings in which they had at-bats.
Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) led the Spartan offense with seven total hits on the day and finished the day 7-for-9 with two home runs and a team-high seven runs scored.
Game one began with each team scoring a pair of runs in the first inning and looked like it might be a back-and-forth battle, but a big offensive performance, combined with solid defensive play secured the victory for York.
The Wolverines had a chance to add to their already 2-0 lead in the first inning with the bases loaded and only one out recorded. However, York's starting pitcher David Walker (Hanover, Pa./South Western) settled in and secured the last two outs with a ground out to third and a check-swing strikeout to end the inning and prevent Wesley from doing any further damage in the first.
Scoring four runs on four hits in the second inning put the momentum on York's side and the hometown nine carried that momentum the rest of the way.
The Spartans had one scare in the fifth as Wesley had the bases loaded with only one out. Walker again rose to the occasion and was able to get out of the jam by picking up a strikeout and forcing fly ball to left field for the final two outs.
Freshman outfielder Logan Countryman (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) had the most notable defensive plays of the day and recorded a key out in the fourth as he traveled nearly 100 feet in a dead sprint and made a sliding back-handed catch in foul territory along the left-field line.
Walker picked up the win and improves to 4-1 as he tossed six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Wesley's Eric Willey suffered the loss and falls to 3-3 as he went five innings, allowing 10 runs on 15 hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Game two started much like the first, as each team tallied runs in the first two innings. Also, much like game one, the York offense tremendous, scoring in seven consecutive innings, while the defense committed just one error and held 18 Wolverine runners on base.
The Spartans put themselves in position for their second victory of the day with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by two two-RBI doubles by senior Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and junior Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown).
Elliot Mortimer (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) claimed the victory and improves to 4-0 as he threw seven innings, allowing just two runs while giving up 12 hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
Eric Marrero was credited with the loss and falls to 1-3 as he pitched four innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks.
York will return to action on Monday in a non-conference contest against Shenandoah. First pitch from Jaquet Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
