Baseball Sweeps Marymount in First-Ever Meeting

ARLINGTON, VA – The York College baseball squad swept a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against conference newcomer Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, VA. The Spartans won game one 11-7 and then completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in the nightcap.

The Spartans improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the CAC while the Saints, in their first year of varsity baseball, fall to 4-14 overall and 0-5 in the league.

The Spartans played long ball to open game one as Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) launched back-to-back blasts to put York up 2-0 two batters into the game.

York picked up a third run in the second as Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) blasted a solo homer to left center to lead off the frame. York pushed their lead to 4-0 on a Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) RBI double down the right field line.

The Saints cut the Spartan lead to 4-2 with a two run outburst in the bottom of the third. The teams traded runs in the fourth and York tallied a run on a Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) RBI single to center as the Spartans led 6-3. The Green and White pushed the lead to 7-3 in the seventh courtesy of a two-out RBI single from Christopher Turrisi (Washington Township, N.J./St. Joseph's).

The Saints got two runs in the bottom of the seventh before the Spartans exploded for a four spot in the top of the ninth. The Saints closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

David Walker (Hanover, Pa./South Western) earned the win as he tossed five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. He improves to 2-1 with the victory.

Jake Brown was the first of four Marymount pitchers in the game as he allowed three runs on four hits in his two innings of work. He falls to 0-4 with the loss.

Six Spartans had multiple hits led by Hershey as the centerfielder went 3-for-6 with two RBI and a run scored. Porter went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two run scored as he blasted a pair of home runs in the win. Turrisi was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Wenzel contributed two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Pitzer and Scott Steffy (Dowingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) each had two hits while Pitzer had an RBI and a run scored.

Gannon White paced the Saints as he was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Bret Phillips added two hits and scored twice while Macon Heikes was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the nightcap, the game was tied at one in heading to the top of the third when York erupted for five runs in the top of the inning. The Spartans got their five runs on four hits and four errors as they seized control of the game.

Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) pushed the Spartan lead to 8-1 when he blasted a two run shot to right in the top of the fourth. The York lead grew to 9-1 when Steffy laced an RBI double to center in the top of the fifth.

The Saints got a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and one more in the eighth to account for the final score.

Freshman Elliot Mortimer (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) earned his second win of the year as he went eight innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Ben Berczek took the loss for the Saints as he allowed nine runs, six earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. He falls to 2-1 with the loss.

Herr paced the Spartans offense in game two as the senior went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Hershey added two hits, two runs scored, and an RBI. Miele went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Steffy added two hits and an RBI.

The Saints had five singles and a double off the bat of Brandon Orbe. Heikes went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday morning when they travel to Randolph-Macon to face the Yellow Jackets in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am.
