Mortimer Twirls Seven Shutout Innings in Spartans' Wednesday Win

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – York College freshman right-hander Elliott Mortimer (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) made his first collegiate start a successful one as he tossed seven shutout innings in the Spartans 11-1 win over Wilkes in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Wednesday.

The Spartans improve to 3-1 with the win as they have now won three straight. The Colonels fall to 3-2 with the loss.

The Spartans got on the board in the third courtesy of a two-run double from Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area). York added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth before a five-run sixth inning blew the game open. The big blow in the sixth came from senior shortstop Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) who blasted a three-run double in the middle of the uprising.

The offensive explosion would be more than enough for Mortimer as he cruised through seven innings, scattering six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Senior Tyler Alexander (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) pitched a perfect eighth and freshman Aaron Herndon (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) was nicked for an unearned run in the ninth as the Colonels avoided the shutout.

Porter had a big day for York, as he was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run scored. Wenzel banged out three hits as he added three RBI and a run scored. Junior J.J. Oleniacz (Great Falls, Va./Langley) continued his torrid start to the season with two hits and a run scored. Junior Stephen Miele (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury) ripped three hits with an RBI and two runs scored while senior Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) had two hits and a pair of runs scored for York.

The Spartans finished the game with 15 hits as they have averaged 11 runs and over 15 hits per game during their three games in Myrtle Beach.

Tyler Marino and Matthew Reese each had two hits for Wilkes while Joshua Slocum was 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Brandon Michael tossed the first four innings for Wilkes as he was charged with three runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. He falls to 0-1 with the loss.

The Spartans conclude their Myrtle Beach portion of the trip with a game against Muhlenberg on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am.
