ASHLAND, VA – The York College baseball team dropped their final road game of the season, falling to Randolph-Macon College 13-5 in a non-conference contest in Ashland, VA on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets improve to 23-16-1 overall while the Spartans fall to 21-21 for the campaign.
Randolph-Macon jumped on the Spartans for a single run in the first followed by two runs each in the second and third innings as the Yellow Jackets took a 5-0 lead.
The Spartans got on the board in the fourth courtesy of an RBI single from Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
The Green and White trimmed the RMC lead to 5-4 as York struck for three runs in the top of the fifth. Jimmy King (Frederick, Md./Frederick) drove home two runs with a single up the middle. King eventually came around to score on a Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) RBI single as the Spartans trailed by just one.
Unfortunately for York, the Yellow Jackets answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame as the Spartans committed three errors in the inning, allowing for the big RMC inning.
Randolph-Macon struck for five more runs in the bottom of the eighth as another Spartan error made all five runs unearned.
York closed out the scoring with an RBI double by senior Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) in the top of the ninth.
Michael Trentham led the Yellow Jackets with three hits, three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Jeb Waymouth went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI while Tim Benjamin finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Travis Lodge was the third Yellow Jacket with three hits in the win.
Herr, Cohen, Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), and Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) each had two hits for the Spartans. King led the squad with two RBI while five different Spartans each scored one run.
Jake Bram earned the win on the mound for the Yellow Jackets as he tossed five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. He improves to 3-4 with the win. Four relievers followed Bram and combined to allow a run on five hits in four innings of action.
Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown) suffered the loss for the Spartans as he falls to 2-8 for the year. He allowed seven runs, four earned, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in four innings. David Walker (Hanover, Pa./South Western) pitched the final four innings of the game, allowing six unearned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Spartans return to Jaquet Field for their final two regular season contests of the year. The Green and White hosts Centennial Conference finalists Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday at 4:00 pm. The Spartans then host nationally ranked Kean in their season finale on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
