YORK, Pa. – The York College men's baseball team committed four errors and only scored twice, resulting in a 16-2 loss against the University of Mary Washington Eagles on Sunday afternoon at Jaquet Field.
With the loss, the Spartans overall record falls to 13-13 and 5-7 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Eagles improve to 18-13 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
The Eagles got on the board right away in the first inning. Jono Haught nailed a two-run homerun to put the Eagles up 2-0. The Spartans offense had no answer for the Eagles in the bottom of the inning, going three up, three down.
Mary Washington added to their lead with a big third inning. The Eagles scored five runs on seven hits to go up 7-0.
The Spartans continued to struggle offensively. It was not until the bottom of the fifth inning that the Green and White finally got on the board. Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) singled up the middle, allowing Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) to record a run.
York added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Justin Cohen (Severn, Md./Old Mill) nailed a double out to center field, helping Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) cross home plate. However, the Spartans still trailed the Eagles 11-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles continued to dominate and finished the game off with five more runs. Seth Jordan slammed the ball over the fence for a two-run homerun. The Eagles then took advantage of two Spartan errors to put up three more runs.
Pacing the struggling Green and White offense was Porter and Worthman. Both players finished 1-for-3 from the plate and had one run. Hershey and Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) each tallied one RBI.
The Spartans used five different pitchers throughout the game, trying to overcome a hot Mary Washington offense. Brad Wenzel (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area) recorded the loss on the mound. He pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits. Patrick Pittman (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) threw for 1.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Matt Goodman (Owing Mills, Md./Franklin) and Chris Wolf (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic) both pitched two innings. Goodman allowed two runs on three hits and Wolf allowed one run on three hits. Andrew Tucci (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) finished out the last inning for the Spartans, allowing five runs on three hits.
The Eagles were led offensively by Jordan. He finished the game 5-for-6 from the plate with three runs and two RBI's. Cam Kostyack also looked strong, going 3-for-6, with four runs and two RBI's.
Torey Mancari earned the win on the mound for the Eagles. Mancari pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs on five hits. Jake Black threw for the final two innings. He allowed zero runs and two hits.
The Spartans return to action at home on Tuesday against Immaculata. The game is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
