St. Mary's Notches a Walk Off Win Over York in Series Opener
ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The St. Mary's College baseball team got a walk-off 4-3 Capital Athletic Conference win over York College in the opening game of a three-game weekend series on Friday in St. Mary's City, MD.
The Spartans fall to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the CAC while the Seahawks improve to 10-14 overall and 3-4 in the league.
York jumped on the board first as they pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the third. A double steal enabled York to get its first run while senior Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) plated the second tally on an RBI single to center.
The Seahawks answered right back off Spartan ace Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./Huntingtown), reaching the right-hander for three runs on four hits and a walk in the bottom of the frame.
The Spartans got single runners on in the seventh and eighth innings but neither runner got past first as the game remained tied.
St. Mary's got two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth but reliever Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) got a pair of strikeouts to extricate himself from the jam.
The Spartans got a runner on in the ninth courtesy of a walk, but the Spartans' pinch runner was picked off, ending the two-out threat.
St. Mary's started the ninth inning, game-winning rally with a single and a sacrifice bunt. Sarecky then hit a batter to put runners at first and second with one out. Brad Dioguardo had an infield single to load the bases before Corey Napier ended the game with a single to center.
Sam Coe earned the win in relief of Seahawk starter Devon Jerrard. Coe tossed the ninth inning as he allowed one walk. He improves to 4-1 with the win. Jerrard allowed three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in eight innings of work.
Sarecky absorbed the loss as the sophomore allowed a run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in his 1.1 innings of action. Gurganus threw well as the sophomore allowed three runs on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk in his seven-inning stint.
Napier led the St. Mary's offense as he was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Dioguardo added two hits and a run scored while Alex Lenovitz and Stefano Muscatelli each had a hit and an RBI.
The Spartans were limited to five hits in the game. It is the fifth time in 18 games that York has been held to five hits or less. Cohen and Porter had the Spartans' lone extra base hits while Worthman and Porter had the York RBI.
The series continues Saturday afternoon when the Spartans return home to host the Seahawks in a pair of seven inning games. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
