Baseball Splits Pair on Chilly Saturday in York
YORK, Pa.— The York College baseball squad split a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with Wesley College on a chilly Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartan defense faltered in game one as the Wolverines stole a 2-0 decision. York's offense then turned it around in game two to win 8-0 and earn the split.
York's record is now 7-8 overall and 1-4 in the CAC. Wesley improves to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in the league.
Game one proved to be a pitchers duel between York's Dan Gurganus (Prince Frederick, Md./ Good Counsel) and Wesley's Jordan Lozzi as both starters were great during the game.
The game finally broke open in the fifth inning with left fielder Morgan Rupp RBI sacrifice fly scoring Corey Smith, who reached base on an error. The Wolverines tacked on another run in the sixth on a Trevor Rears RBI single scoring catcher Corey Jefferson who had two doubles on the day.
Gurganus pitched seven strong innings allowing three hits and one earned run. With the loss his record now falls to 1-3 on the year. Gurganus struck out three and walked two as he suffered the hard-luck loss.
His performance was outmatched by Lozzi who picked up the win. Lozzi twirled a one-high shutout as he improves to 4-0. He struck out five and walked four in his fantastic outing. Lozzi only hit allowed was a third inning single down the right field line by Spartan senior Dustin Worthman (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca).
Game two had a different outcome as the Spartans jumped on the scoreboard early on a bases loaded two RBI single to the left side by senior Justin Cohen (Severn,Md./ Old Mill).
Cohen struck again in the third with an RBI single up the middle. Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa. / South Western) added two more runs with a single up the middle. With that Wolverine starter Zach Stuart was removed from the game. He picked up the loss on the day.
The Green and White added three more runs on in the fourth on a Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa. / Lower Dauplin) sacrifice fly. Senior Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) was next and he doubled to right center scoring Worthman. After a pitching change by the Wolverines, Cohen continued his tremendous performance adding a single up the middle to score Frankenfield as the York lead grew to 8-0.
Cohen finished the game three for three with four RBIs. Herr and Frankenfield both had two hits and one RBI each.
Spartan starter Josh Miller (Briarcliff Manor, NY. / Briarcliff) went the distance allowing no runs on two hits in seven innings. With the win his record improves to 2-1.
York returns tomorrow to finish up the three game series with Wesley. First pitch is slated for 1:00 pm at Jaquet Field in York.
