GRANTHAM, Pa. – The York College baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-3 non-conference victory at Messiah on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-7 overall, while the Falcons drop down to 3-8.
The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Thanks to two big hits and three walks, Messiah ended the inning up by three.
The Green and White struggled to get things going in the beginning of the game. In the fourth inning, they got the bats going. York scored four runs in the top of the fourth. Colbe Herr (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) started things off with a home run to left field. After a second pitching change in the inning, Derek Pitzer (York, Pa./Dallastown) recorded a three run home run. The Spartans finished the inning with the lead, which they would not relinquish the rest of the game.
The Spartans added to their lead with one run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Dustin Worthman's (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) ground out to first base allowed Colin Porter (Hanover, Pa./South Western) to cross the plate in the sixth and then Herr scored again after a ball got by the Falcons catcher in the seventh.
Messiah had no answer in the seventh. The Spartans continued to push their lead in the eighth inning, going up 8-3. Hits from Drew Frankenfield (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Porter helped Andrew Hershey (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) and Herr reach home.
The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth off a single ripped to right field. Despite the later runs, the Falcons could not overcome their deficit and the Spartans would hold strong in the ninth inning for the win.
York finished the game with eight runs on eight hits. Pacing the Spartans on offense was Herr. He finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. Porter also had a strong game, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Pitzer recorded three RBI's and one run.
Senior starter Josh Kohn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) earned the win for the Green and White, tossing five innings. Kohn allowed three runs on two hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. David Walker (Hanover, Pa./South Western) came in for three innings to relieve Kohn. Walker pitched three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with three walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore Mike Sarecky (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) finished the game out and earned a save. Sarecky pitched one inning, recording one walk and one strikeout.
Messiah finished the game with five runs on four hits. Leading the Falcons on offense was Ben Sollenberger. He went 1-for-2 with two RBI's. Casey Ebersole added two runs.
The Falcons had used a total of eight pitchers throughout the game. The pitching crew combined for a total of seven walks, three strikeouts and two homeruns. Jon Lapp recorded the loss on the mound. He pitched a total of 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, with a walk and a homerun.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday for a Capital Athletic Conference matchup against Wesley. The conference doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
