York, Pa. -- The York College baseball team got their first home win of the season on a brisk Wednesday at Jaquet Field, besting the visiting Elizabethtown College Blue Jays 9-5. The win puts the Spartans to 5-4 on the young season while the Blue Jays fall to 4-9.
The Blue Jays got off to an early lead thanks to Aaron Rahn's RBI single in the top of the second inning. While the Blue Jays were good early, it looked like York's offense was struggling to get going on the cold day.
Blue Jays answered right back in the fifth inning with another run. York pushed two more runs across the plate in the bottom half of the inning on a Pitzer RBI groundout and a Bartholomew RBI single as the Spartan lead grew to 6-2.
York went on to tack on another run in the sixth on a Frankenfield RBI single. The Blue Jays cut into the Spartan lead in the top of the sevent scoring three runs on a groundout by second basemen Ian Smith and Kyle Gable 2 RBI single that appeared to be a great catch by Frankenfield but was ruled a drop by the base umpire. Gable finished the day with four hits leading the Blue Jays. Gable's hit trimmed the Spartan lead to 7-5. The Spartans closed out the scoring with two more runs in the eighth on a Hershey two-run double.
Spartan offense went off for 15 hits, with every member of the starting lineup contributing with at least one hit. Porter led the team with three hits while he also scored twice for York. Hershey, Pitzer and Bartholomew all finished with two RBI each in the victory.
Senior starter Josh Kohn (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) picked up his first win of the season, tossing 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Sophomore Zach Phillipi (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) picked up the save, only allowing one hit in two innings of work. Philippi struck out two in earning his first save of the year.
Hoffstein suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. He falls to 0-2 with the loss.
The Spartans will travel down to Salisbury on Saturday for a three game weekend series. The Spartans and Sea Gulls will play two on Saturday starting at 1:00 pm and then square off on Sunday in a nine-inning single game at 1:00 pm.
