Ullom Sets Saves Mark as Spartans Win CAC Tournament Opener

YORK, PA – The York College baseball team opened up their stay in the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference tournament with an 8-5 win over Stevenson University in the tournament's first round on Tuesday in York.

The Spartans have won four straight and nine of their last 13 to improve to 17-17 overall. The Mustangs fall to 18-18-2 for the campaign.

The Mustangs looked to ruin the Spartan momentum of their weekend sweep of Mary Washington by reaching starter Tommy Moran for a pair of runs in the top of the first.

The Spartans answered the Mustangs plus three in the bottom of the second. Freshman Derek Pitzer singled to start the inning and junior Nic Long reached on a throwing error to put Spartans at first and second. Andrew Hershey moved Pitzer and Long each up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt, putting York in great position to tie the game. Pitzer scored on a Colin Porter RBI ground out and Long came around to score one batter later as Colbe Herr singled to left center. Senior Dustin Worthman then doubled, moving Herr to third and bringing to the plate the Spartans' hottest hitter in Steve Tretter. The senior centerfielder delivered Herr, Worthman and himself with a three-run jack to left as the Spartans took a 5-2 lead.

York added a run in the fourth on an RBI double from Tretter as the Spartan advantage stood at 6-2. Stevenson nicked Moran for a run in the top of the fifth but York answered with a two-run double by Hershey as the York lead increased to 8-3.

Stevenson got two runs in the top of the sixth to close out the scoring. The Spartan bullpen was outstanding again for York as Dan McNamara tossed two scoreless innings while senior Brandon Ullom earned his eighth save of the year with a 1.1 inning outing in which he allowed one base runner. The save for Ullom broke the Spartan career record, passing former Spartan standout Ed Meister for the all-time mark as Ullom now has 13 saves for his career.

Moran earned the victory as he improves to 5-2. He allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Drew Leibert took the loss for the Mustangs as he allowed eight runs, three earned, on 10 hits in his complete game effort. He falls to 7-3 with the setback.

Tretter led the Spartans as he went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. His double was his team-leading 17th of the year while his home run was his fourth of the year. Hershey finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI while Herr added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Zac Stavish paced the Mustangs with three hits and three RBI while Josh Morris was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored.

The Spartans advance to face Wesley in the second round of the tournament on Friday afternoon at top-seeded Salisbury. The Spartans, who are the two seed, and the Wolverines, who are the fourth seed, play at 4:00 pm.
