Blue Jays Clip Spartans
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - The Elizabethtown College Blue Jay baseball team edged the York College Spartans 3-2 in a tight non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon in Elizabethtown, PA. The Blue Jays improve to 6-2 overall while the Spartans are now 4-7.
Elizabethtown opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Matt Reade drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on wild pitch and to third on a ground out. Reade scored four pitches later as Kevin Berkheiser singled up the middle, giving the hosts the 1-0 lead.
The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 2-0 one inning later as Tyler Weary began the frame with a single through the left side. Weary stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on an RBI ground out.
Elizabethtown got it's third and final run in the fourth as Reade homered to left to lead off the inning. It was the third straight inning that the Blue Jays got the lead off hitter on base. The inning could have been bigger but junior lefthander Dan McNamara came out of the pen to relieve starter Zach Philippi and got out of the inning after Philippi had allowed a single and a walk to follow up the home run. McNamara got a pop out, a fly out and a put out at third to end the frame.
While the Blue Jay offense was scoring, the Spartan offense struggled against Blue Jay starter Rob Cressman. York had one runner on in each of the first six innings but the Spartans didn't get any clutch hitting as York was held scoreless through six frames.
The Spartans finally got on the board once Cressman left the game in the top of the seventh. Colin Porter started the inning with a walk. Nic Long followed with a single to put Spartans at first and second. After a pop out and a strikeout, Jimmy King singled to right, scoring Porter with York's first run. Senior Steve Tretter scored Long with a double down the right field line as the Blue Jay lead was trimmed to 3-2. King would be left at third and Tretter at second as reliever Kristopher Davis was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
McNamara continued to hold the Blue Jay offense in check as he gave York one of the finest pitching performances of year. McNamara threw five shutout innings, allowing just one hit on a highly efficient 39 pitches.
The Green and White went in order in the eighth and ninth innings as they couldn't get the tying run on base in the final two frames.
Cressman earned the win as he threw six scoreless innings as he allowed three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He improves to 1-1 with the win. Todd Leister threw the final inning for the Blue Jays as he picked up his second save of the year. He needed just 11 pitches to navigate the ninth inning for Elizabethtown.
Philippi suffered the loss for York as he allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his three-plus innings of action. He falls to 1-1 with the loss.
Berkheiser led the five-hit Blue Jay attack with two singles and an RBI. Reade was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Tretter led the Spartans with a pair of doubles while he also had and RBI. King went 1-for-4 with an RBI. York finished the game with six hits while they left eight runners stranded.
