Spartans Drop a Pair at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, VA – The York College baseball squad dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Randolph-Macon College on Saturday afternoon in Ashland, VA. Randolph-Macon took game one 13-2 and then completed the sweep with a 3-1 win in game two. The Yellow Jackets improve to 23-18 overall with the two wins while the Spartans fall to 11-25.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets scored a single tally in the bottom of the first inning, taking the 1-0 lead. The Spartans took a short-lived lead in the third on a two-run Jimmy King single to right center as York took a 2-1 lead.

The hosts exploded for a four spot in the bottom third to take a 5-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets then blew the game wide open with four more runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and one final run in the sixth for the final 13-2 margin.

Jamie Hendrick tossed a complete game as he allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Hendrick improves to 6-2 with the win.

Senior Andy Rosenzweig suffered the loss as he allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks in three innings of work. The three relievers that followed Rosenzweig to the mound did not fare well as they combined to allow eight runs on seven hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts in three innings.

Six Yellow Jackets had two hits each led by Greg Mitro as the second baseman was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Jordan Walton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Brian Jordan was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

The Spartans were led by King, as the sophomore was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Five other Spartans had singles in the game as York did not have an extra base hit in the game.

In game two, Randolph-Macon got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. The uprising was aided by a Spartan error making both runs unearned. Spartan starter Joey Couch settled in and threw the ball as he kept the Yellow Jackets off the board until the sixth when they got a run off a Jay Lichter RBI double.

York avoided the shutout in the seventh as Steve Tretter and CT Stanley were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats. A walk to Justin Cohen loaded the base with nobody out. Freshman Colin Porter grounded out to second to score Tretter and get the Spartans on the board. However, reliever Dale Langford relieved starter Michael Helbig and got out of the jam with a ground out and a fly out to right.

Helbig earned the win as he allowed a run on two hits with five strikeouts and a walk. He improves to 8-2 with the win. Langford earned his fourth save of the year with a perfect seventh inning after entering the game with the bases loaded and no outs.

Couch was very good as he allowed three runs, just one earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and no walks. He falls to 3-8 with the undeserved loss.

Jordan led the hosts with two hits and a run scored while Walton was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Lichter was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Sophomore Nic Long and senior Kyle Cook each had singles for York as the Green and White was limited to just two hits in the game.

York returns to action on Monday when they travel to Messiah for a non-conference contest. Game time in Grantham, PA is set for 3:30 pm.
