NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The York College baseball team dropped a pair of games at the top ranked team in the nation as Christopher Newport downed the Spartans 5-4 in the opener before completing the sweep with a 10-3 win in the nightcap.
The Captains, who established a school-record for wins in a season with their two victories, improve to 39-5 overall while the Spartans fall to 9-23.
In game one, York got on the board in the top of the first courtesy of a Devin Harbold sacrifice fly. The Captains, aided by a Spartan miscue, answered with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 advantage after a wild first inning of play.
The Captains recaptured the lead in the fifth as Matt Shoemaker blasted a two-out solo home run to left center, giving the Captains a 4-3 lead. They added a huge insurance run in the sixth as Connor Madden had an RBI single, increasing their lead to 5-3.
The Spartans narrowed the gap in the seventh as sophomore Jimmy King doubled to lead off the inning. After a strike out and a fly out that moved King to third, he scored on a Captains' error. York couldn't bring the tying run home as they suffered the loss.
Sean Chitsaz earned the win as he allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in his six innings of work. Chitsaz improved to 9-2 with the win. Ryan Fleichmann picked up his eighth win of the year despite allowing a run in the seventh.
Sophomore Joey Couch suffered the loss as he falls to 3-7. He allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Chris McDougal led the Captains with two hits and a pair of RBI. Shoemaker was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI while Madden also had a pair of hits and an RBI.
King paced the Spartan offense, as he was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Herr had an RBI while Tretter and senior Kyle Cook were both 1-for-4 with an RBI while Cook also had a run scored.
In the nightcap, the Captains opened the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. York cut the lead in half in the top of the third as Tretter blasted his third home run of the game. It was a two-out solo blast that got the Spartans on the board.
The Spartans tied the game at two in the top of the fourth on a Joe Doyle sacrifice fly. However, the Captains would recapture the lead and then build on it over their final three at-bats of the game. CNU scored the tiebreaking run in the fourth then three in the fifth and four more in the sixth to blow the game wide open.
Bryan Bierlein earned the win as he tossed six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six punchouts and two walks. Bierlein improves to 6-0 with the win.
Senior ace Andy Rosenzweig absorbed the loss as he allowed six runs on 11 hits with one strikeout in five innings. He falls to 3-6 with the setback.
Shoemaker had a big game two as the CNU second baseman was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored including his second home run of the day. Luke Saunders and Drue Vernon each had a trio of hits for the Captains. Vernon scored two runs and drove in another while Saunders had two RBI. Mark Shannon also had a strong game with two hits and two runs scored for the hosts.
Doyle paced the Spartans, as he was 2-for-3 with two RBI while Tretter was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Spartans return to action on Monday, April 25 when they host Franklin & Marshall in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4:00 pm and will be preceded by Senior Day ceremonies.
