Couch Pitches Spartans to Split at Frostburg
NEW MARKET, VA – The York College baseball squad split their Saturday double-header with Frostburg State University in New Market, VA. The Bobcats won the opener 7-3 before the Spartans battled back to earn the split in the nightcap, 4-1.
The Spartans are now 5-13 overall and 4-8 in the CAC while the Bobcats stand at 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the conference.
The twin bill was originally scheduled to be played at FSU but their field was unplayable so the games were moved to Rebel Field.
In the opener, Frostburg jumped on Spartan ace Andy Rosenzweig for four runs in the bottom of the first frame. York got one of those runs back in the top of the third when Steve Tretter walked, moved to third on a Kyle Cook double and then scored on a Justin Cohen RBI ground out.
The Spartans cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as Adam Hegedus had an RBI single while Tretter also had an RBI in the frame. The Spartans had the chance to plate a few more runs but left the bases loaded as they headed to the bottom of the fourth down a run.
Frostburg responded to the Spartan outburst with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away.
Greg Ross earned the win as he went six innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and three walks as he improves to 4-1. Zach O'Dell tossed the seventh and final inning, allowing one hit for the Bobcats.
Rosenzweig suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs, six earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and a walk in his six innings of work. He falls to 3-3 overall.
Matt Donaldson led the Bobcats, as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Hawthorne added two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Matt Greene and Doug Anuszewski each added two hits to the nine-hit Frostburg attack.
Senior Devin Harbold led the Spartans, as he was 2-for-2 with a run scored while Cook also had a pair of knocks for York. Tretter, Cohen and Hegedus each had an RBI for York.
In game two, the Bobcats got a first inning run off Spartan starter Joey Couch but after that, Couch settled in and had he best start of the year as he went the distance, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks. He improves to 2-4 for the campaign.
The Spartans got Couch all the runs he needed in the second. Harbold led off the inning reaching on a fielding error. He moved to second when Tretter singled to left. Senior CT Stanley walked to load the bases for York with one out. Freshman Colbe Herr stroked a two-run single down the right field line, scoring Harbold and Tretter. York would not be able to get any more as they eventually left the bases loaded while they did have a 2-1 lead.
York got a single run in the fifth on a Harbold RBI single and then pushed their advantage to 4-1 on a Sean McCann RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.
The Spartan defense did a nice job behind Couch as they turned three double plays in the win.
Josh Davis suffered the loss as he allowed four runs, two earned, on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. Davis is now 2-1 for the year.
Herr had the big knock for the Spartans as he finished the game 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI. Harbold was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while senior Joe Doyle was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Donaldson had another big offensive game for Frostburg, as he was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Greene was 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Bobcats.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon as they host Stevenson University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. First pitch at Jaquet Field is set for 2:00 pm.
