Seahawks Sweep Spartans in Saturday Twinbill
YORK, PA – The York College baseball squad got swept by St. Mary's College on Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill in York. The Seahawks won the opener 5-2 and concluded the sweep with a 5-0 win in the nightcap.
York falls to 4-11 overall and 3-7 in the CAC while the Seahawks are now 13-9 overall and 6-6 in the league.
In the opener, the Seahawks struck for a single run in the third to take the early lead. York tied the game in bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI infield single by Devin Harbold.
St. Mary's recaptured the lead in the fifth on an Eric Gronbeck RBI single to the hole at short. Corey Napier then ripped a shot down the third base line to score Matt Baden as the visitors took a 3-1 lead.
The Seahawks got two huge insurance run as the Spartans committed a bases loaded error with two outs, allowing St. Mary's to score two unearned runs, pushing their lead to 5-2.
York would be unable to reach Seahawk reliever Mikel Iraola as the senior allowed just one Spartan base runner of the final two innings to earn the save.
Mike Victory earned the win for the Seahawks as he allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk in his five innings of action. He improves to 2-3 with the win.
Sophomore Joey Couch took the loss as he allowed five runs, but just two earned, on six hits in his 5.2 innings of work. He falls to 1-4 as he posted three strikeouts and a pair of walks.
Gronbeck led the Seahawk offense, as he was 1-for-3 with two RBI while Napier was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Stanley had a pair of knocks for York, as he was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Harbold added two hits to the seven-hit Spartan attack.
In the nightcap, the Seahawks reached freshman starter David Walker for a single run in the top of the first courtesy of a Spartan error. Baden reached on the miscue to start the inning before eventually scoring on a Keith Johnson RBI single to right.
Walker would settle in as the freshman really threw the ball well. Unfortunately for York, the Spartans would be unable to figure out St. Mary's starter Barrett Enix as he kept the Green and White off balance at the plate in his 5.2 innings of shutout work.
The Seahawks tallied two big insurance runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to provide for the final 5-0 score in the nightcap.
Enix earned the win as he improves to 2-1. He scattered five hits in his stint. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Wick Eisenberg tossed the final 1.2 innings of the game to earn the save as he allowed one hit during his outting. The save is his fourth of the year and second of the weekend.
Walker took the hard luck loss as the freshman allowed three runs, just one earned, on two hits, three walks, and four strikeouts. He tossed 5.1 innings as he falls to 0-1 with the loss. Fellow freshman Tyler Alexander threw the final 1.2 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits during his stint.
Baden led the five-hit St. Mary's attack with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI while Johnson was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Cook led York with two hits including his fourth double of the year.
The Spartans jump out of conference play on Tuesday as they travel to Rowan to face the Profs in a non-league tilt in Glassboro, NJ. York then returns home on Wednesday when they host Wesley in a CAC make up game. First pitch from Jaquet Field is set for 3:30 pm.
