ABERDEEN, MD – The York College baseball team had one of their best days of the young season as the Spartans swept Stevenson University in a Capital Athletic Conference twin bill on Saturday in Aberdeen, MD. The Spartans improve to 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the CAC while the Mustangs fall to 5-13 and 2-6 in the conference.
The Spartans won the opener 5-1 and completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
Senior ace Andy Rosenzweig was outstanding in game one as the right-hander allowed just one run on four hits in the complete, seven-inning victory. Rosenzweig improves to 3-1 with the win.
The Spartans got Rosenzweig an early lead with a CT Stanley home run to lead off the second inning. York added to the lead in the fifth as Joe Doyle doubled with one out in the inning. After a fly out, senior Devin Harbold delivered a clutch two-out single to push the York lead to 2-0. Harbold advanced to second on the throw trying to nail Doyle at the plate and he came around to score when freshman Colin Porter singled.
The Mustangs got a run on a pair of hits in the bottom of the fifth but York answered in the top of the sixth as Doyle laced a two-out, two-run double down the left field line, accounting for the final 5-1 margin for the Spartans.
Doyle had an outstanding game, as the senior was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Stanley was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI on his first homer of the year. Harbold was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Mitch Berman had a hit and an RBI for the Mustangs.
DJ Milliken suffered the loss for the Mustangs as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out three and walked one as he falls to 0-3.
In the nightcap, York jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as senior Rob Klinck drilled an RBI double to right-center, giving the Green and White the early lead.
The Mustangs got a single run in the bottom of the third as the run was unearned due to a Spartan error.
York struck again in the fifth as Stanley doubled to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, Doyle doubled home Stanley to increase the York lead to 4-1. Harbold then plated Doyle with an RBI single to center.
Both teams tallied a single run in the seventh, providing for the final 6-2 score.
Couch earned the win, his first of the year, as he went five innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout. Ryan Kellough suffered the loss for Stevenson as he allowed four runs on eight hits in his four innings of work. He falls to 1-1 for the year.
Cohen led the Spartans, as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win. Doyle and Klinck were both 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Leadoff man Steve Tretter contributed two hits to the 12-hit Spartan attack.
Justin Anderson paced Stevenson, as he was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Scott Merkel and Dustin Tarlow each contributed a pair of hits.
The Spartans, who had their game at Lynchburg scheduled for Sunday postponed, will make their 2011 home debut on Tuesday afternoon when they host Elizabethtown in a non-conference contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at Jaquet Field and kicks off a season-high four-game home stand.
