Spartans End Atlanta Trip with 10-5 Loss
ATLANTA, GA – The York College baseball squad concluded their stay at the 2011 Emory University Rawlings Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 10-5 loss to the host Emory Eagles. The Spartans fall to 1-3 overall while the Eagles improve to 4-1 overall.
The Spartans jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore catcher Justin Cohen had a sacrifice fly to plate the first run while senior Joe Doyle also had an RBI single as the Green and White got off to a good start in the game.
The Eagles wasted little time in responding as they tallied three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gabe Shivers plated all three runs in the frame with a two-out bases loaded triple, giving Emory the one-run lead. The Spartans tied the game at three in the top of the third as junior Steve Tretter walked, advanced to second on a throwing error, to third on a fly out to right and then scored courtesy of a Doyle single to right.
Emory answered quickly as they plated three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to forge a 6-3 lead. They pushed it to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a Ryan Jones RBI double.
The Spartans cut into their deficit in the top of the sixth thanks to some shaky Emory defense. The Spartans received an RBI ground out from senior Kyle Cook and a sacrifice fly from Tretter as the Spartans got two runs without a hit.
Emory got a trio of runs in the eighth as junior Brandon Ullom had an uncharacteristic outing as he allowed three runs on three hits with a Spartan error in the frame.
Jason Edwards earned the win for Emory as he went six innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. He improves to 1-1 for the season. Ryan Orlovsky allowed a pair of runs in his one inning of work while Matt McMahon and Ryan Toscano each threw a perfect inning of relief for the Eagles.
Sophomore Brian Lusby suffered the loss as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks during his four innings of work. He falls to 0-1 with the loss. Freshman Tyler Alexander was stellar in his three innings of work out of the pen. Alexander allowed one hit with one strikeout as he gave the Spartan offense a chance to get back into the game. Ullom allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits in his one inning of work.
Shivers led the Eagle offense with three hits, three RBI and a run scored while Jones added a pair of knocks and a trio of RBI. Andrew Cohn and Brandon Hannon each had two hits as Emory banged out 14 hits in the win.
Doyle led the Spartans with two hits and two RBI as York could manage just six hits in the game. Worthman added two runs scored for the Spartans.
The Spartans head home to York on Sunday night before heading to Salisbury University for a three-game Capital Athletic Conference series starting on Friday. First pitch from Salisbury on Friday is slated for 2:30 pm.
